Apparently yes… or at least that was the scientific consensus. No other living creatures chew their prey, instead ripping or biting it. Even sharks, famed for their bite, don’t actually chew. But recent research shows that at least one form of stingray has evolved the ability to masticate food, in this case to break through the hard crust of its preferred meal of shellfish. So us mammals are no longer alone in the club of food chewers. Who knew?
